Five Things to Look ForPäť vecí, ktoré si všimnite

Ľubovňa rewards a slow visit, because it is really two attractions on one hillside — the castle above and the village of rescued timber buildings below. Between them, these are the things people remember.Ľubovňa sa odmení pomalej návšteve, pretože ide vlastne o dve atrakcie na jednom kopci — hrad hore a dedinu zachránených drevených stavieb dolu.

The Round TowerOkrúhla veža

GothicGotika ViewpointVyhliadka

The stout cylindrical tower at the highest point of the rock is the surviving core of the original border fortress — the piece everything else was built around. From the top the whole strategic logic of the place becomes obvious in about four seconds.

The castle chapel is the quietest room on the hill and the one that most clearly belongs to the Polish centuries — a small, richly finished space that served the starosta’s household rather than a garrison.

The Polish counts who owned Ľubovňa from the 1880s lived here as a family, and the rooms restored to their era are the reason the castle feels inhabited rather than archaeological. It is the most recent layer, and much the easiest to picture yourself in.Poľskí grófi, ktorí Ľubovňu vlastnili od osemdesiatych rokov devätnásteho storočia, tu žili ako rodina, a práve izby obnovené do ich doby robia hrad obývaným, nie archeologickým. Je to najmladšia vrstva — a zďaleka najľahšie si v nej seba predstavíte.

In the meadow directly under the walls stands a whole rescued hamlet: log cottages, barns, a smithy and a school, dismantled in the villages of the upper Spiš and rebuilt here. Its centrepiece is a wooden Greek Catholic church moved from the village of Matysová — shingled, dark with age, and the reason many people come at all.

Ľubovňa also served as a prison, and its best-known inmate was Móric Beňovský — the eighteenth-century soldier and traveller whose later career took him across Siberia to Madagascar. The castle tells his story on the route; it is a good corrective to the idea that a frontier castle only ever did frontier work.Ľubovňa slúžila aj ako väznica a jej najznámejším väzňom bol Móric Beňovský — vojak a cestovateľ osemnásteho storočia, ktorého ďalšia dráha zaviedla cez Sibír až na Madagaskar.
