Nitra sits in the middle of Slovakia's richest arable country, and for most of the modern era the city's job was to process what the plain grew. The corner of Štúrova and Štefánikova held the largest expression of that: a steam mill founded in 1863, rebuilt after a fire in the 1920s and enlarged between the wars until it was among the most modern milling works in the country. By the end it was a walled industrial quarter of more than twenty buildings, with its own railway siding running in off the main line.Nitra leží uprostred najúrodnejšieho poľnohospodárskeho kraja Slovenska a úlohou mesta bolo po väčšinu novoveku spracovať to, čo rovina dopestovala. Roh Štúrovej a Štefánikovej niesol najväčší prejav tejto úlohy: parný mlyn založený v roku 1863, po požiari v dvadsiatych rokoch obnovený a medzi vojnami rozšírený natoľko, že patril k najmodernejším mlynom v krajine. Ku koncu to bola ohradená priemyselná štvrť s vyše dvadsiatimi budovami a s vlastnou železničnou vlečkou zvedenou z hlavnej trate.
Milling stopped in the early 1990s, and for the rest of that decade the site did what abandoned industry does everywhere — it sat there, walled off, taking up several hectares of the exact ground a city of eighty thousand people most wanted to walk through. Construction of the shopping centre began in 2007 and it opened in the autumn of 2009. A tall office block on the Štúrova corner belongs to the same redevelopment. Whatever you think of malls, this one filled a hole rather than eating a field, and it kept the old name while doing it.Mlelo sa tu naposledy na začiatku deväťdesiatych rokov a po zvyšok desaťročia areál robil to, čo opustený priemysel robí všade — stál, ohradený, a zaberal niekoľko hektárov presne tam, kadiaľ osemdesiattisícové mesto najviac potrebovalo prechádzať. Stavba obchodného centra sa začala v roku 2007 a otvorilo sa na jeseň 2009. K tej istej prestavbe patrí aj vysoká administratívna budova na rohu Štúrovej. Nech si o nákupných centrách myslíte čokoľvek, toto zaplnilo dieru namiesto toho, aby zjedlo pole — a pritom si nechalo staré meno.
