In the early 2000s the Nitra region had no modern shopping centre at all. Chrenová did have several hectares of tarmac: the overflow parking of Agrokomplex, the national agricultural exhibition grounds, which fills to bursting for a week or two each year and stands largely idle the rest of the time. Building on it cost the city almost nothing it was using. Centro opened in April 2006 as the first modern centre in the region, and was enlarged with a second phase in 2009.Začiatkom dvetisícych rokov nemal Nitriansky kraj moderné nákupné centrum vôbec žiadne. Chrenová však mala niekoľko hektárov asfaltu: záložné parkovisko Agrokomplexu, národného poľnohospodárskeho výstaviska, ktoré sa raz či dvakrát do roka zaplní do prasknutia a po zvyšok času stojí prevažne prázdne. Stavať na ňom stálo mesto takmer nič z toho, čo skutočne využívalo. Centro otvorili v apríli 2006 ako prvé moderné centrum v kraji a v roku 2009 ho rozšírili druhou etapou.
For those three years it had the region to itself, and the habit stuck. When Galéria Mlyny opened in the middle of town in 2009 the obvious prediction was that the older centre would empty out. It did not, because the two are not really competing for the same visit: Mlyny is where you walk in from the boulevard with an hour to spare, and Centro is where a family from the estates or from a village east of the city does the weekly shop with a car outside the door. Nitra ended up with both halves of the equation, which is more than most Slovak cities of this size manage.Tri roky mal kraj sám pre seba a zvyk zostal. Keď v roku 2009 otvorili v strede mesta Galériu Mlyny, očakávalo sa, že staršie centrum sa vyprázdni. Nestalo sa, pretože obe v skutočnosti nesúperia o tú istú návštevu: do Mlynov vojdete z bulváru, keď máte hodinu času, a do Centra prichádza rodina zo sídlisk alebo z dediny východne od mesta na týždenný nákup s autom pri dverách. Nitre tak zostali obe polovice rovnice, čo sa podarí máloktorému slovenskému mestu tejto veľkosti.
