First, the confusion worth clearing up. Topoľčianky — the village and its château — is not Topoľčiansky hrad, the white-towered ruin above Podhradie in the Považský Inovec, and it is not the town of Topoľčany either. Three similar names, three different places, one of them very much not a castle.Najprv jedno vysvetlenie. Topoľčianky — obec a jej kaštieľ — nie sú Topoľčiansky hrad, zrúcanina s bielou vežou nad Podhradím v Považskom Inovci, a nie sú ani mesto Topoľčany. Tri podobné mená, tri rôzne miesta a jedno z nich rozhodne nie je hrad.
The oldest part here is a fortified Renaissance manor of the sixteenth century, four wings around a courtyard with arcades running along the inside — the standard type for a landowner who still needed walls but wanted to live behind them. It passed through several great families of the kingdom, among them the Rákóczis and the Keglevichs, and later came into Habsburg hands.Najstaršou časťou je opevnený renesančný kaštieľ zo šestnásteho storočia — štyri krídla okolo nádvoria s arkádami po vnútornom obvode, typ obvyklý pre zemepána, ktorý ešte potreboval múry, ale chcel za nimi bývať. Prešiel viacerými veľkými rodmi kráľovstva, medzi nimi Rákócziovcami a Keglevichovcami, a neskôr sa dostal do habsburských rúk.
Then, in the eighteen-twenties, the owners did something bolder than restoring it: they built a whole new wing across the front in the classicist manner — a low, pale, colonnaded palace with a pillared portico, the architecture of the Enlightenment set against a Renaissance fortress-house. The result is a building with two entirely different faces, and walking from one to the other is the quickest architecture lesson in the Nitra region.Potom, v dvadsiatych rokoch devätnásteho storočia, urobili majitelia niečo odvážnejšie než obnovu: cez celé priečelie postavili nové krídlo v klasicistickom slohu — nízky, svetlý palác so stĺporadím a portikom, architektúru osvietenstva postavenú oproti renesančnému opevnenému domu. Vznikla budova s dvoma úplne odlišnými tvárami a prejsť od jednej k druhej je najrýchlejšou hodinou architektúry v Nitrianskom kraji.
