An Hour Up Through Oak WoodHodinu hore dubovým lesom

There is no road to Gýmeš and no lift, and that is half of what makes it good. The marked trail starts in Jelenec and climbs for roughly an hour through oak and hornbeam — steep in places, rooty, and genuinely slippery after rain, on forest paths rather than steps. The wood closes over you almost at once, so the castle stays hidden until you are nearly on top of it. Then the ground narrows to a ridge, the trees thin, and the first thing you meet is what the builders meant you to meet: the outer bailey and the gate, set square across the only sensible way in.Ku Gýmešu nevedie cesta ani lanovka — a v tom je polovica jeho čara.

Inside, the ruin is a walk rather than a tour. Sections of the palace still stand to a good height, the walls of the chapel hold their shape, and between them the ground is grass, leaf litter and fallen stone. There is nothing else on the hill at all — no ticket office, no café, no toilets, no railings and no marked route through the walls. In recent years volunteer heritage work has been carried out here, as at many Slovak ruins, to stabilise masonry that was losing its argument with weather and roots; the results show as cleanly capped wall heads, but this is a consolidated ruin, not a restored castle. And where the trees break on the southern side, the whole Nitra lowland opens out below — fields, villages, and the city itself somewhere in the haze.Vnútri nie je zrúcanina prehliadkou, ale prechádzkou. Časti paláca stoja ešte do slušnej výšky, múry kaplnky držia svoj tvar a medzi nimi je len tráva, lístie a spadnutý kameň.
