Limestone & KarstVápenec a kras

Water is slightly acid, limestone dissolves in it, and everything else follows: plateaus with no rivers on them, gorges with rivers under them, and more than seven thousand known caves.

What karst isČo je kras

Karst is what limestone does when rain gets into it. Water seeps along joints, widens them, and eventually takes the whole drainage underground; the surface is left dry, pitted with sinkholes, and useless for farming, while below it the water cuts passages and, where the water table drops, leaves them air-filled.Kras je to, čo vápenec robí, keď sa do neho dostane dážď.

The Slovak Karst in the south-east is the classic example: a set of flat plateaus — Silická, Plešivecká, Koniar, Zádielska — with almost no surface water, cut at their edges by dry valleys and, at Zádiel, by a gorge four hundred metres deep and in places barely ten wide.Slovenský kras na juhovýchode je učebnicovým príkladom: sústava plochých planín — Silickej, Plešiveckej, Koniarskej, Zádielskej — takmer bez povrchovej vody, po okrajoch rozrezaná suchými dolinami a pri Zádieli tiesňavou hlbokou štyristo metrov a miestami sotva desať metrov širokou.

The caves and the gorgesJaskyne a rokliny

The caves are the reason the region is on the UNESCO list, jointly with the Aggtelek karst across the Hungarian border — Domica and the Hungarian Baradla are two ends of one system. Elsewhere the same rock gives the Demänovská caves under the Low Tatras, the Belianska cave in the Tatras, the Dobšiná ice cave and the aragonite cave at Ochtiná, which formed differently again. Inde dáva tá istá hornina Demänovské jaskyne pod Nízkymi Tatrami, Beliansku jaskyňu v Tatrách, Dobšinskú ľadovú jaskyňu a aragonitovú jaskyňu v Ochtinej, ktorá vznikla opäť inak.

Slovenský raj is karst treated roughly: a plateau cut by streams that have not yet gone entirely underground, so instead of dry valleys you get narrow gorges with the water still in them, waterfall after waterfall, which is why the routes there need ladders.

Travertine is limestone going the other way: mineral water saturated with calcium carbonate reaches the surface, loses its pressure, and deposits the rock it was carrying. It builds mounds, terraces and whole hills, quickly enough that leaves and twigs get fossilised inside it.Travertín je vápenec idúci opačným smerom: minerálna voda nasýtená uhličitanom vápenatým vystúpi na povrch, stratí tlak a uloží horninu, ktorú niesla. Vytvára kopy, terasy a celé kopce — a dosť rýchlo na to, aby v ňom skameneli listy a vetvičky.

Spiš Castle stands on a travertine hill; so does the ruin at Dreveník beside it. Sivá Brada is an active mound still building, and the terraces and crater lake at Vyšné Ružbachy and the ground under Bešeňová are the same process. It is the one Slovak rock formation you can watch being made.
