955 – 1000/1001Raiders become a kingdomZ nájazdníkov sa stáva kráľovstvo

For half a century after 907 the Magyars rode out across Europe as raiders, until a German army broke them at the Lechfeld near Augsburg in 955. That defeat forced a choice: stay nomads and be destroyed, or settle down, farm and accept Christianity. They settled. On Christmas Day 1000 — or on the first day of 1001, the sources allow both — their prince Vajk was crowned as King Stephen I, with a crown that tradition says the pope sent him, and the Kingdom of Hungary began. The territory of today's Slovakia was absorbed into it over the following decades and stayed inside it for some nine hundred years, until 1918 — long enough that Slovak, Hungarian and German became the everyday languages of the same towns.
