Around the year 828 Pribina, the prince who ruled from the rock above the river at Nitra, had a Christian church consecrated there by Adalram, archbishop of Salzburg. It is the first Christian church recorded anywhere on the territory of today's Slovakia, and the earliest church among the West Slavs whose existence is documented in writing. The text that reports it — a Salzburg account written some decades later — adds a detail that says a great deal about how Christianity actually arrived here: Pribina himself had not been baptised yet. The building is long gone and archaeologists still argue about where on the hill it stood; traces of a ninth-century church have been found under the cathedral complex on the castle rock, but whether that is Pribina's church is not settled.Okolo roku 828 dal knieža Pribina, ktorý vládol z brala nad riekou Nitrou, vysvätiť v Nitre kresťanský kostol; posvätil ho salzburský arcibiskup Adalram. Je to prvý kresťanský kostol doložený na území dnešného Slovenska a najstarší písomne doložený kostol u západných Slovanov. Text, ktorý o ňom píše — salzburský spis vzniknutý o niekoľko desaťročí neskôr — dopĺňa podrobnosť, ktorá veľa hovorí o tom, ako sem kresťanstvo naozaj prichádzalo: sám Pribina vtedy ešte pokrstený nebol. Samotná stavba dávno zanikla a archeológovia sa dodnes sporia, kde presne na kopci stála; pod areálom katedrály na hradnom brale sa síce našli stopy kostola z 9. storočia, či je to práve Pribinov, isté nie je.
