On 14 March 1939, under direct pressure from Hitler — who told the Slovak leaders that the alternative was partition between Hungary and Germany — the assembly in Bratislava declared independence. German troops occupied the Czech lands the next day. The Slovak State was a one-party authoritarian regime of Hlinka's Slovak People's Party, headed by the Catholic priest Jozef Tiso, with its own uniformed Hlinka Guard, and it was a satellite and a willing ally of Nazi Germany. Independence did not even protect its borders: on 23 March 1939 Hungary attacked in the east, and the treaty signed in Budapest on 4 April cost Slovakia a further 1,697 square kilometres. Slovak troops took part in the invasion of Poland in September 1939 and in the war against the Soviet Union from 1941.Štrnásteho marca 1939, pod priamym Hitlerovým nátlakom — slovenským predstaviteľom odkázal, že inou možnosťou je rozdelenie medzi Maďarsko a Nemecko — vyhlásil snem v Bratislave samostatnosť. Samostatnosť neochránila ani hranice: 23. marca 1939 zaútočilo na východe Maďarsko a zmluva podpísaná 4. apríla v Budapešti stála Slovensko ďalších 1 697 kilometrov štvorcových. Slovenské jednotky sa zúčastnili na napadnutí Poľska v septembri 1939 a od roku 1941 na vojne proti Sovietskemu zväzu.
