Four weeks after serfdom fell, about thirty men of Štúr's circle met at Liptovský Mikuláš and on 10 May 1848 adopted the Demands of the Slovak Nation — the first Slovak political programme ever written. Its fourteen points asked for a Slovak assembly, Slovak schools, Slovak in the courts and offices of Slovak districts, and the vote. Drafted largely by Štefan Marko Daxner and Ján Francisci, it asked for all of this inside Hungary, not against it. The government in Pest answered with martial law and arrest warrants — for Štúr on 12 May, Hodža on 22 May, Hurban on 1 June — and all three had to flee the country.Štyri týždne po páde poddanstva sa v Liptovskom Mikuláši zišlo asi tridsať mužov zo Štúrovho okruhu a 10. mája 1848 prijali Žiadosti slovenského národa — vôbec prvý slovenský politický program. Štrnásť bodov žiadalo slovenský snem, slovenské školy, slovenčinu na súdoch a úradoch v slovenských stoliciach a volebné právo. Text zostavili najmä Štefan Marko Daxner a Ján Francisci a žiadal to všetko v rámci Uhorska, nie proti nemu. Vláda v Pešti odpovedala stanným právom a zatykačmi — na Štúra 12. mája, na Hodžu 22. mája, na Hurbana 1. júna — a všetci traja museli z krajiny ujsť.
