Driven out of Hungary, the three turned to Vienna. On 15 September 1848 they founded the first Slovak National Council there; four days later, on the square at Myjava, it declared the Slovaks free of the Hungarian government and called them to arms. Some six hundred volunteers marched in that first campaign and were pushed back into Moravia within a fortnight; a second went out that winter and occupied Turčiansky Svätý Martin, Prešov and Košice, and a third fought on until the Hungarian surrender in August 1849. The corps was disbanded at Pressburg on 21 November 1849 — and Vienna, which had been glad enough to use the volunteers, gave the Slovaks almost nothing in return. The next generation drew the obvious lesson: this nation would have to be built with schools and books rather than with rifles.
