In September 1663 the great fortress of Nové Zámky surrendered after a siege of some weeks, and the Ottomans made it the seat of a whole province, which they held for twenty-two years; Nitra Castle was taken that October and retaken a year later. The empire replaced the lost fortress at once, building the star fort of Leopoldov on the Váh between 1665 and 1669 and naming it after Emperor Leopold I. Then the war turned: the Ottoman army was beaten outside Vienna in September 1683, the frontier began rolling back south, and Nové Zámky was retaken in 1685. Southern Slovakia is still ringed with bastions and earth ramparts from those hundred and fifty years — and when a story high in the northern mountains says the Turks wrecked the castle, it is almost always the wrong explanation.V septembri 1663 sa po niekoľkotýždňovom obliehaní vzdala veľká pevnosť Nové Zámky a Osmani z nej urobili sídlo celej provincie, ktorú držali dvadsaťdva rokov; v októbri toho istého roku obsadili aj Nitriansky hrad, o rok neskôr im ho vzali späť. Cisár dal stratenú pevnosť hneď nahradiť: v rokoch 1665 – 1669 vyrástla na Váhu hviezdicová pevnosť Leopoldov, pomenovaná po cisárovi Leopoldovi I. Potom sa vojna obrátila — v septembri 1683 utrpelo osmanské vojsko pri Viedni porážku, hranica sa začala posúvať na juh a roku 1685 boli Nové Zámky opäť v cisárskych rukách. Na juhu Slovenska ostali po tých stopäťdesiatich rokoch bastióny a zemné valy — a keď vám vysoko v severných horách povedia, že hrad zbúrali Turci, takmer isto to tak nebolo.
