The Reformation went through this country fast: by the later sixteenth century most of the towns and much of the nobility were Lutheran, and people heard sermons in Slovak, German and Hungarian. On 28–30 March 1610 the synod of Žilina, called and chaired by the palatine Juraj Turzo — the palatine was the kingdom's highest office after the king — gave the Lutherans of Upper Hungary a church organisation of their own, under three superintendents, that is bishops. The Catholic answer was built at Trnava, where on 12 May 1635 Cardinal Péter Pázmány founded a university with faculties of philosophy and theology, later law and medicine. For 142 years it was the country's principal seat of learning, until Maria Theresa moved it to Buda in 1777 — which is why today's Hungarian state university dates its founding to a Slovak town. Katolícka odpoveď vyrástla v Trnave: 12. mája 1635 tam kardinál Peter Pázmaň založil univerzitu s filozofickou a teologickou fakultou, neskôr aj s právnickou a lekárskou. Stoštyridsaťdva rokov bola najvýznamnejšou vysokou školou krajiny — až ju Mária Terézia roku 1777 presťahovala do Budína, a preto sa dnešná maďarská štátna univerzita hlási k založeniu v slovenskom meste.
