In 1670 a conspiracy of great nobles against Emperor Leopold I was uncovered; its leaders were executed, and the emperor used the plot to suspend the kingdom's old constitution, quarter troops on the estates and move hard against the Protestant churches. Extraordinary courts sitting at Pressburg in 1673 and 1674 summoned hundreds of Lutheran and Calvinist pastors and teachers; those who would neither convert nor go into exile were condemned, marched across Europe and sold as galley slaves at Naples in 1675. Twenty-six of them were still alive a year later, when the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter persuaded the Spanish authorities there to hand them over. It is one of the harshest episodes in this country's history and it happened in a courtroom, not on a battlefield — which is exactly why the next forty years were spent in revolt.Roku 1670 sa prevalilo sprisahanie veľmožov proti cisárovi Leopoldovi I.; jeho vodcov popravili a cisár celú vec využil na to, aby pozastavil starú uhorskú ústavu, rozložil vojsko po panstvách a tvrdo zakročil proti evanjelickým cirkvám. Mimoriadne súdy, ktoré roku 1673 a 1674 zasadali v Prešporku, predvolali stovky evanjelických a kalvínskych farárov a učiteľov; tých, čo neprestúpili na katolícku vieru ani neodišli do vyhnanstva, odsúdili, prehnali cez pol Európy a roku 1675 predali na galeje do Neapola.
