The Hussites were the armies of the Czech religious reform movement, followers of Jan Hus, who was burned as a heretic in 1415. King Sigismund of Luxembourg spent twenty years fighting them in Bohemia and Moravia, and their columns raided far into the north of the kingdom: through the 1420s and 1430s they reached the Danube and the western hills again and again, and in 1430 a Hussite army took the castle at Oponice above the Nitra valley. They fought in a new way, with field guns, handguns and wagon forts, which is one reason the castles here spent the next century thickening their walls instead of raising taller towers. Be careful with the local versions of this story, though: Topoľčany still tells how Hussites held its castle from 1431 to 1434, and research on the castle itself has found no trace of them. Bojovali novým spôsobom, s poľnými delami, ručnicami a vozovými hradbami — aj preto hrady u nás celé nasledujúce storočie radšej zosilňovali múry, než by stavali vyššie veže.
