11 April 1241 – spring 1242One battle, and a year of burningJedna bitka a rok ničenia

In March 1241 the Mongol armies of Batu Khan and his general Subutai came through the Carpathian passes, and on 11 April they destroyed the Hungarian royal army at Mohi on the river Sajó, in a night attack on its wagon camp. King Béla IV got away and fled the length of his own kingdom, ending up on an island off the Dalmatian coast with Mongol riders still hunting him. For about a year the invaders moved across the country burning whatever would burn, and almost everything would: villages, wooden forts, the harvest. They left in the spring of 1242, not because anyone had beaten them — the traditional explanation is that the Great Khan had died far away in Mongolia and the princes rode home to choose a successor, though historians now weigh the weather, hunger and losses as well.V marci 1241 prešli mongolské vojská Batuchána a jeho vojvodcu Subutaja karpatskými priesmykmi a 11. apríla v nočnom útoku na vozový tábor pri Muhi nad riekou Slaná zničili uhorské kráľovské vojsko.
