Two charters written for the Benedictine abbey on Zobor hill above Nitra, dated 1111 and 1113, are the oldest documents preserved in Slovakia. They are property records — lists of villages, fields, fishing rights and the people who owed labour on them — and that is exactly what makes them valuable: the 1113 charter names dozens of settlements, and for many Slovak villages it is the first time they appear in writing at all. One of the two also mentions a school, the earliest recorded anywhere in the country. It is worth being careful with a date like that, though. "First written mention in 1113" is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived; most of those villages were already old when a monk finally wrote their names down.Dve listiny napísané pre benediktínske opátstvo na Zobore nad Nitrou, datované rokmi 1111 a 1113, sú najstaršie listiny zachované na Slovensku. Sú to majetkové súpisy — zoznamy dedín, polí, rybolovných práv a ľudí, ktorí na nich museli robotovať — a práve preto sú také cenné: listina z roku 1113 vymenúva desiatky sídel a pre mnohé slovenské obce je to vôbec prvá písomná zmienka. Jedna z tých dvoch spomína aj školu, najstaršiu doloženú v krajine. S takýmto dátumom však treba narábať opatrne. „Prvá písomná zmienka z roku 1113“ je údaj o listine, nie o tom, kedy sem prišli ľudia; väčšina tých dedín bola dávno stará, keď si mních konečne zapísal ich meno.
