Europa Shopping Center Zvolen — Zvolenská Európa to most people in the town — opened in June 2012. It shares its name with the larger Europa Shopping Center up the road in Banská Bystrica, and it is worth saying once, plainly, that the two are separate buildings in separate towns; the shared name causes enough confusion to be worth clearing up before anything else. What it does not share with most of its generation is an address. It does not sit on a ring road, or behind a retail-park car park, or at the end of a slip road with a furniture warehouse for a neighbour.Europa Shopping Center Zvolen — pre väčšinu Zvolenčanov jednoducho Zvolenská Európa — otvorili v júni 2012. Meno má spoločné s väčším centrom Europa Shopping Center kúsok po ceste v Banskej Bystrici a hneď na úvod sa oplatí povedať nahlas, že ide o dve samostatné budovy v dvoch rôznych mestách; ten spoločný názov mätie dosť často na to, aby sa to vyjasnilo skôr než čokoľvek iné. Čo však s väčšinou centier svojej generácie nezdieľa, je adresa. Nestojí pri obchvate, ani za parkoviskom retailového parku, ani na konci privádzača so susedom v podobe skladu nábytku.
It stands at the head of Námestie SNP, and that square is not a square in the ordinary sense. It is a vast open rectangle of paving, with the free-standing parish church of St Elizabeth — late fourteenth century — planted squarely in the middle of it, and a younger Evangelical church with a tall tower standing further down toward the castle end. The whole surface was remodelled in the early 2000s, and in winter an ice rink goes up on it. The shopping centre closes the northern end of all that: a contemporary block of glass and pale cladding facing an enormous historic space, with the old town's own life — market stalls, benches, dogs, children on the ice — going on across the paving in front of it. Very few malls anywhere have to hold their own against a view like that, and it is the reason this one is worth a page.Stojí na čele Námestia SNP a to námestie nie je námestím v bežnom zmysle slova. Je to obrovský otvorený obdĺžnik dlažby, uprostred ktorého je zasadený voľne stojaci farský Kostol svätej Alžbety z konca štrnásteho storočia, a nižšie, smerom k zámku, stojí mladší evanjelický kostol s vysokou vežou. Celú plochu prestavali začiatkom dvadsiateho prvého storočia a v zime na nej stojí klzisko. Nákupné centrum uzatvára severný koniec toho všetkého: súčasný blok zo skla a svetlého obkladu obrátený k obrovskému historickému priestoru, pred ktorým na dlažbe pokračuje vlastný život starého mesta — stánky, lavičky, psy, deti na ľade. Len málo nákupných centier kdekoľvek na svete sa musí presadiť proti takémuto pohľadu, a práve preto si toto zaslúži vlastnú stránku.
