Built for the King’s HuntPostavený pre kráľovský lov
Vígľaš was raised in the fourteenth century as a royal hunting castle for the kings of Hungary — a companion piece to Zvolen, a few kilometres west. Between them the two seats commanded the hunt in the enormous forests of the old Zvolen county, and they were built for that purpose rather than for a mountaintop siege: an irregular quadrangle of wings closed around a courtyard, with towers at the corners, standing on a low rise above the Slatina rather than on a crag.Vígľaš vznikol v štrnástom storočí ako kráľovský poľovnícky hrad uhorských panovníkov — náprotivok Zvolena, ktorý leží pár kilometrov na západ.
The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries turned a hunting lodge into a frontier post. Ottoman raiding parties pushed up from the south into this country, and the castle became one of the places that watched for them; later the anti-Habsburg uprisings that repeatedly swept central Slovakia washed over it as well. Through those same centuries it slipped out of the crown’s hands — pledged away and held by a succession of noble families rather than by the king — and it was never again simply a place where a monarch came to hunt.Šestnáste a sedemnáste storočie premenili poľovnícke sídlo na pohraničnú pevnôstku. V tých istých storočiach sa vymkol z rúk koruny — panovník ho dal do zálohy a namiesto kráľa ho držala postupnosť šľachtických rodov — a už nikdy nebol len miestom, kam si panovník chodil zaloviť.
After that the story is one of long, undramatic change: the frontier moved away, the hunt moved on, and the castle settled into the ordinary life of a country seat and then of an estate building. What happened to it in 1945 is the turn the whole page hangs on, and it has a chapter of its own further down.
