The towers at the angles of the quadrangle are what give Vígľaš its outline, and they are also the clearest statement of what the reconstruction did: they had lost their tops entirely, and they carry roofs again. Vígľaš was never a rock-perched eyrie. It is a quadrangle of wings closed around a courtyard on a low rise — the shape of a residence that also had to be defensible, rather than of a fortress that later grew comfortable. Once you notice the difference you start seeing it in castles all over the region.Vígľaš nikdy nebol orlie hniezdo na skale. Poľana
The massif rising behind the castle is an extinct volcano and the largest of its kind in the country — a UNESCO biosphere reserve of beech forest, mountain meadow and grazed pasture. It is the reason there were royal hunting forests here in the first place, and it is still the best half-day you can have from Vígľaš.Masív, ktorý sa dvíha za zámkom, je vyhasnutá sopka a najväčší útvar svojho druhu v krajine — biosférická rezervácia UNESCO s bukovými lesmi, horskými lúkami a pasienkami. The castle stands where the Zvolen basin narrows into the valley of the Slatina, and that narrowing is the whole reason it is here: road, river and the country east all pass through one place. Drive it slowly.
