You do not have to climb for this one. The castle sits on a rise directly above the village, and the walk up from the main street is a matter of minutes rather than the hour that Slovakia’s big hill ruins demand. What appears as you come up is the thing that makes Ľupča unusual: a closed, roofed, four-square complex instead of the familiar jagged outline of broken walls. Steep tiled roofs, chimneys, a tower still wearing its cap, and curtain walls thickened and reshaped for the gunpowder age. From a distance it reads less like a ruin than like a small fortified town that simply decided to stay.Tentoraz sa nemusíte štverať do kopca. Hrad stojí na vyvýšenine priamo nad obcou a cesta hore z hlavnej ulice je otázkou minút, nie hodiny, akú si žiadajú veľké slovenské zrúcaniny na kopcoch. To, čo sa pri stúpaní vynorí, je práve tá zvláštnosť Ľupče: uzavretý, zastrešený a pravidelný komplex namiesto známej rozorvanej siluety polámaných múrov. Strmé škridlové strechy, komíny, veža, ktorá má stále svoju čiapku, a hradby zhrubnuté a pretvarované pre éru pušného prachu. Zďaleka nepôsobí ako zrúcanina, ale skôr ako malé opevnené mestečko, ktoré sa jednoducho rozhodlo zostať.
Inside the walls the honest description is work in progress. The complex is arranged around a courtyard, with ranges of rooms on more than one level; some have been carefully brought back, others are still waiting their turn, and the line between the two moves every year. That is why the interior is seen on a guided tour rather than wandered at will — you go where the guide takes you, and what that covers depends on how far the restoration has got. In the grounds stands the castle’s other well-known inhabitant, a very old linden tree (see below). And from the walls comes the reward: the Hron below, the valley running east into the hills, and the long wooded wall of the Low Tatras closing the northern horizon.Za múrmi je najpoctivejší opis rozrobené dielo. Komplex je usporiadaný okolo nádvoria, s krídlami miestností na viacerých úrovniach; niektoré sú starostlivo obnovené, iné ešte len čakajú a hranica medzi nimi sa každý rok posúva. Práve preto sa interiér prezerá so sprievodcom a nie voľne — idete tam, kam vás sprievodca zavedie, a čo to zahŕňa, závisí od toho, kam sa obnova dostala. V areáli stojí druhý známy obyvateľ hradu, veľmi stará lipa (viac nižšie). A z hradieb prichádza odmena: Hron pod vami, dolina miznúca na východ v kopcoch a dlhá zalesnená stena Nízkych Tatier, ktorá uzatvára severný obzor.
