The King’s LindenKráľova lipa

In the castle grounds grows a linden of great age — one of those Slovak trees that is given a name instead of a number. Here the name is the “king’s linden”, and the king in question is Matthias Corvinus. Tradition has it that the king, hunting in these forests, sat out the heat of an afternoon in its shade, and that the tree has been his ever since. It is worth saying plainly: there is no documentary support for it. No charter records the afternoon, and nobody can put a birth year on a tree of that size with any confidence. This is tradition, not history.V areáli hradu rastie lipa úctyhodného veku — jeden z tých slovenských stromov, ktoré dostanú meno namiesto čísla. Nijaká listina to popoludnie nezaznamenáva a nikto nedokáže s istotou určiť rok narodenia stromu takých rozmerov. Toto je tradícia, nie história.

What is not in doubt is the setting the story grew out of. This was a royal hunting castle — that is what it was founded to be — and the forests running north from the Hron toward the Low Tatras were royal hunting ground for centuries. Kings genuinely did come here to hunt, and Matthias Corvinus genuinely did reign over this kingdom in the fifteenth century. The legend takes a documented world and adds to it one unrecorded afternoon, which is more or less how the best local stories get made. Stand under the tree and you can see why this one stuck.O čom však pochybnosti nie sú, je prostredie, z ktorého príbeh vyrástol.

The hunts are in the record. The afternoon in the shade is not — and that is exactly why the story outlived everyone who could have checked it.Poľovačky sú doložené. Popoludnie v tieni nie — a práve preto príbeh prežil všetkých, ktorí ho mohli overiť.
