In the year 179, soldiers of a Roman detachment wintering north of the Danube had a victory inscription cut into the rock below what is now Trenčín Castle. It records eight hundred and fifty-five men of the Second Legion, the officer who ordered the carving, and — crucially — the name of the place they were sitting in: Laugaricio. It is the northernmost Roman inscription known from beyond the Danube frontier, and the first time any settlement on the territory of today's Slovakia was written down anywhere in the world. O osemnásť storočí neskôr požičalo mesto toto meno nákupnému centru.
The centre itself opened in 2009, on the Belá side of Trenčín, where the through roads and the space were. It did not arrive on empty ground: a loose belt of big-box retail — a hypermarket, furniture and electronics sheds, a builders' merchant — had already gathered along that edge, the way it has on the edge of almost every Slovak district town. What Laugaricio did was pull the covered, walkable part of that belt into a single building, and it has been the region's largest ever since. It was built in phases, with further floorspace added after the first opening. Whether the result is a gain or a loss depends entirely on which end of Trenčín you live in — but it is where the Váh valley now does its Saturday shopping.Samotné centrum otvorili v roku 2009 na belianskej strane Trenčína, tam, kde boli prieťahy a miesto. Neprišlo na prázdnu lúku: pozdĺž tohto okraja sa už predtým nazbieral voľný pás veľkoplošných predajní — hypermarket, haly s nábytkom a elektronikou, stavebniny — presne tak, ako na okraji takmer každého slovenského okresného mesta. Laugaricio spravilo to, že zastrešenú a pešo prejditeľnú časť tohto pásu stiahlo do jednej budovy, a odvtedy je najväčšie v kraji. Stavalo sa po etapách a po prvom otvorení pribudli ďalšie plochy. Či je výsledok ziskom alebo stratou, závisí výlučne od toho, na ktorom konci Trenčína bývate — ale sobotné nákupy si Považie vybavuje práve tu.
