Six Hundred Years Before the LegendŠesťsto rokov pred legendou
Čachtice was built for a reason that has nothing to do with why people come today. It was raised in the middle of the thirteenth century, in the wave of stone castle-building that followed the Mongol invasion, on a ridge that watches the gap where the Little Carpathians run out and the Váh valley opens northward. From up there a garrison could see traffic coming long before it arrived.Čachtický hrad postavili z dôvodu, ktorý nemá nič spoločné s tým, prečo sem ľudia chodia dnes.
Over the following centuries the castle changed hands the way most Hungarian royal castles did: to the great magnates, briefly into the orbit of Matúš Čák, back to the crown, and eventually — in the sixteenth century — into the estates of the Nádasdy family. Building continued through all of it, and the ruin you walk today is layered: a compact medieval core on the highest rock, and later enceintes and bastions spreading down the ridge, added when firearms changed what a castle had to survive.V nasledujúcich storočiach menil hrad majiteľov tak, ako väčšina uhorských kráľovských hradov: prešiel k veľkým magnátom, nakrátko do okruhu Matúša Čáka, späť ku korune a napokon — v šestnástom storočí — do majetkov rodu Nádašdyovcov. Stavalo sa počas celého toho obdobia a zrúcanina, ktorou dnes prechádzate, je vrstvená: kompaktné stredoveké jadro na najvyššej skale a neskoršie opevnenia a bašty rozliate po hrebeni, pridané vtedy, keď palné zbrane zmenili to, čo musel hrad prežiť.
The end came in the eighteenth century, during the anti-Habsburg uprisings that swept this region: Čachtice was burned and never rebuilt. For most of the next three hundred years it decayed quietly. Only in recent decades has that changed — a major conservation project in the early 2010s stabilised the walls, rebuilt collapsed sections in visibly modern masonry, and opened a proper visitor route with a viewing platform in the tower. Zmenilo sa to až v posledných desaťročiach — veľký konzervačný projekt zo začiatku desiatych rokov 21. storočia spevnil múry, dostavil zrútené časti viditeľne moderným murivom a otvoril riadnu návštevnícku trasu s vyhliadkovou plošinou vo veži.
