The Báthory CasePrípad Alžbety Bátoriovej

Elizabeth Báthory (1560–1614) belonged to one of the most powerful families in the Kingdom of Hungary and married into another, the Nádasdys; Čachtice was part of the estate she administered after her husband’s death. What is documented is this: at the end of 1610 an investigation was opened on the king’s authority and carried out by the palatine, György Thurzó. Several of her servants were tried and executed the following year. Báthory herself was never brought to trial. She was held in close confinement at Čachtice until she died in 1614.Alžbeta Bátoriová (1560–1614) pochádzala z jedného z najmocnejších rodov Uhorského kráľovstva a vydala sa do ďalšieho, k Nádašdyovcom; Čachtice patrili k panstvu, ktoré po manželovej smrti spravovala. Viacerých jej služobníkov v nasledujúcom roku súdili a popravili. Samotnú Bátoriovú pred súd nikdy nepostavili. Držali ju v prísnom väzení na Čachticiach až do smrti v roku 1614.

Everything beyond that is contested. The accusations recorded against her were extraordinary in scale, but they rest on testimony gathered under the interrogation practices of the early seventeenth century, in a case with obvious political and financial dimensions — enormous Nádasdy estates, and debts the crown owed the family. Historians have argued for decades over how much of it happened, how much was exaggerated, and how much was constructed. The famous detail of bathing in blood appears nowhere in the contemporary record: it turns up in accounts written more than a century after her death, and has been growing ever since.Všetko ostatné je sporné.

Tradition says she was walled into a room in the castle and fed through a hatch. The documents record confinement, not the masonry. Stand on the ridge and it is worth holding both things at once: a real judicial episode with real victims and real politics behind it, and four centuries of storytelling built on top — the second of which is why the coach park below fills up on summer weekends.

The confinement is documented. Almost everything the legend adds to it is not.Väznenie je doložené. Takmer všetko, čo k nemu legenda pridala, nie je.
