Brhlovce sit in a shallow valley in the volcanic hills east of Levice, in the warm, dry country between the Hron and the Štiavnické vrchy. Rock dwellings appear across this tuff belt, and the usual explanation for them here is the Ottoman raids of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: a cave in the rock face was somewhere to hide what could not be carried away. What is certain is that they went on being made and enlarged as ordinary housing, with rooms, chimneys, windows cut through to the light and masonry fronts built onto the rock. Families lived in them into the twentieth century. The core of the village was declared a reserve of folk architecture to stop the last of them collapsing or being modernised away.Isté je, že sa naďalej tesali a rozširovali ako bežné bývanie — s izbami, komínmi, oknami prerazenými k svetlu a murovanými priečeliami prilepenými na skalu. Rodiny v nich žili ešte v 20. storočí. Jadro obce vyhlásili za rezerváciu ľudovej architektúry, aby posledné z nich nepadli alebo nezmizli pod modernizáciou.

A lane of façades stands against a low cliff, and behind each front the room continues into the rock. One house is open as a museum, furnished as it would have been lived in, with the working parts — the cellar, the store, the animal shelter — cut deeper into the hillside behind.Ulička priečelí stojí pri nízkom brale a za každým priečelím pokračuje izba do skaly. Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen
Brhlovce is inhabited, and most of the rock houses are private property with people living in front of or above them. The museum house is the one to go into; everything else is looked at from the lane. Opening is seasonal and limited — confirm before setting out, because a wasted drive here is a long one.Brhlovce sú obývané a väčšina skalných domov je súkromným majetkom, pred ktorým alebo nad ktorým ľudia žijú. There is no railway. Buses run from Levice, and by car it is a signposted turn off the road between Levice and Pukanec.Železnica sem nevedie. Autobusy premávajú z Levíc a autom ide o značenú odbočku z cesty medzi Levicami a Pukancom.
