Nitra folds into a bend of its river beneath a wooded ridge, and the practical consequence for a visitor is that the city has no single hotel district. Beds are scattered across four or five distinct areas, each of which buys you something and costs you something else. The old town — the pedestrian streets around Svätoplukovo námestie and the climb up to the castle and the Upper Town — is the obvious choice if you have come to look at Nitra itself. Everything worth walking to lies within about fifteen minutes, restaurants stay open around you, and you will not need a car at all. Above and behind it rises Zobor, the hill that gives the city its skyline. Stays on the Zobor slope are quieter, greener and noticeably cooler in August, with forest trails starting more or less at the door — but nearly all of them assume you have a car, or the patience for a city bus down the hill. Chrenová, east across the river, is the university and exhibition quarter: functional rather than pretty, but close to the campuses and to the exhibition grounds. The riverside and the belt of parkland along the Nitra split the difference — walkable to the centre without being inside it. And beyond the city limits, the ring of villages offers space, quiet and rooms in restored manor houses, on the firm condition that you are driving.Nad ním a za ním sa dvíha Zobor, kopec, ktorý dáva mestu jeho panorámu. A za hranicami mesta ponúka veniec obcí priestor, ticho a izby v obnovených kaštieľoch, s jednou pevnou podmienkou: že šoférujete.

The lanes climbing the southern flank of Zobor hold Nitra's most appealing addresses. They are villa streets, half-shaded, with vine terraces and garden walls, and the forest paths that lead to the summit begin only a little way further up. It is a genuinely different experience of the city — you look down at it rather than sit inside it — and the price is that almost nothing is within walking distance except the hill itself.Uličky stúpajúce po južnom úbočí Zobora ukrývajú najlákavejšie nitrianske adresy. The penzión is the backbone of Slovak lodging outside the largest cities, and Nitra is no exception — most visitors here end up in one whether they planned to or not.
