The thaw in Slovakia began with candles rather than speeches. On the evening of 25 March 1988 more than ten thousand people gathered on Hviezdoslavovo námestie in Bratislava holding lit candles, and stood in silence. They were asking for bishops to be appointed to Slovakia's empty dioceses, for religious freedom and for civil rights. The police answered with water cannon, dogs and batons, drove cars into the crowd and made arrests in the surrounding streets. It was the first mass protest in Czechoslovakia since 1969, it was organised largely by the underground Catholic church, and foreign journalists were there to film it — which is why the regime could not simply pretend it had not happened. Polícia odpovedala vodnými delami, psami a obuškami, vrážala do davu autami a v okolitých uliciach zatýkala.
