Declaring a state and holding one are two different jobs. Hungary did not accept the loss of its northern counties, and in the summer of 1919 the Hungarian Red Army pushed deep into Slovakia; on 16 June 1919 a Slovak Soviet Republic was proclaimed at Prešov, lasted twenty-one days, and vanished when the Hungarian troops withdrew in July under Allied pressure. The borders were finally written down in the Treaty of Trianon on 4 June 1920. In the middle of all this the new state lost the Slovak who had done most to create it: Milan Rastislav Štefánik — astronomer, French army general and war pilot — was killed on 4 May 1919 when his aircraft crashed at Ivanka pri Dunaji, within sight of Bratislava. An accident is the accepted explanation; the rumours have never entirely died away.Vyhlásiť štát a udržať ho sú dve rôzne veci. Maďarsko sa so stratou svojich severných stolíc nezmierilo a v lete 1919 vtrhla Maďarská červená armáda hlboko na Slovensko; 16. júna 1919 vyhlásili v Prešove Slovenskú republiku rád, trvala dvadsaťjeden dní a zanikla, keď maďarské vojská v júli pod tlakom dohodových mocností ustúpili. Hranice napokon zapísala Trianonská zmluva zo 4. júna 1920. Uprostred toho všetkého prišiel nový štát o Slováka, ktorý pre jeho vznik urobil najviac: Milan Rastislav Štefánik — astronóm, generál francúzskej armády a vojnový letec — zahynul 4. mája 1919, keď sa jeho lietadlo zrútilo pri Ivanke pri Dunaji, na dohľad od Bratislavy.
