Magyarization tightened until it reached the village school. The education laws of 1907, named after the minister Albert Apponyi, required every primary-school child to be able to read, write and count in Hungarian within four years, and from 1909 to be taught religion in it too — in villages where nobody spoke the language at all. On 27 October 1907 the people of Černová, near Ružomberok, blocked the consecration of the church they had paid for themselves, because the priest they wanted, Andrej Hlinka, had been suspended and the ceremony was going ahead without him. Gendarmes fired into the crowd: fifteen people were killed and twelve seriously wounded, and five of the seven who fired were themselves Slovaks — which is exactly how Magyarization was meant to work, from the inside. Reported across Europe and America, Černová did more for the Slovak cause abroad than any pamphlet.Maďarizácia sa stupňovala, až došla do dedinskej školy. Školské zákony z roku 1907, pomenované po ministrovi Albertovi Apponyim, žiadali, aby každé dieťa vedelo po štyroch rokoch čítať, písať a počítať po maďarsky, a od roku 1909 sa muselo po maďarsky učiť aj náboženstvo — v obciach, kde tou rečou nehovoril nikto. Dvadsiateho siedmeho októbra 1907 zabránili obyvatelia Černovej pri Ružomberku vysviacke kostola, ktorý si sami zaplatili: kňaza, ktorého chceli, Andreja Hlinku, suspendovali a obrad sa mal konať bez neho. Žandári vystrelili do davu — pätnásť mŕtvych, dvanásť ťažko ranených — a piati zo siedmich, čo strieľali, boli sami Slováci — presne tak mala maďarizácia fungovať, zvnútra. Správy o Černovej obehli Európu aj Ameriku a urobili pre slovenskú vec v zahraničí viac než ktorýkoľvek leták.
