With Buda in Ottoman hands the government of the kingdom had to move somewhere safe, and in 1536 the diet made Pressburg the capital of Royal Hungary; the parliament sat there until 1848. From 1552 the Holy Crown itself was kept in the castle above the town, and the diet of 1608 fixed its place in the south-western tower — which is why that tower is called the Crown Tower to this day. Nineteen coronations followed in St Martin's Cathedral below, from Maximilian in 1563 to the last queen consort in 1830: eleven rulers and eight royal consorts, Maria Theresa among them in 1741. Each new king rode out to a mound heaped from earth carried in from every county of the kingdom and cut the air with a sword towards the four points of the compass, swearing to defend the country from every direction.
