In 1465 King Matthias Corvinus obtained a papal bull and founded the Academia Istropolitana at Pressburg — today's Bratislava — the first university on the territory of Slovakia. It taught law, medicine and the arts to students from several countries, and it also shows how fast a thing disappears when one man pays for it: Matthias died in 1490, the money stopped, and the university closed. The same generation left something that did survive. In 1517 Master Paul of Levoča finished the carved high altar of St James's church, 18.62 metres of lime wood, the tallest late-Gothic altar in the world — still standing where he put it.Roku 1465 vymohol kráľ Matej Korvín od pápeža bulu a založil v Prešporku — v dnešnej Bratislave — Academiu Istropolitanu, prvú univerzitu na území Slovenska.
