Pohoda is the largest music festival in Slovakia — three days each July on the airfield at Trenčín, with international headliners on the big stages and Slovak bands playing to more people than they will see in the rest of the year.Pohoda je najväčší hudobný festival na Slovensku — tri dni každý júl na letisku v Trenčíne, s medzinárodnými hviezdami na veľkých pódiách a so slovenskými kapelami, ktoré tam hrajú väčšiemu publiku než po celý zvyšok roka.
It began in 1997 as a single day at the town stadium, put together by the musician Michal Kaščák, who has run it ever since. The move to the airfield came in 2004, and since then the organisers have held the capacity down rather than chased it.Začala sa v roku 1997 ako jediný deň na mestskom štadióne; pripravil ho hudobník Michal Kaščák, ktorý festival vedie dodnes. The site is a working grass airfield, not a park, and that is most of the character: stages in the open with hangars behind them, turf underfoot — mud in a wet year — and the hills of Považie on either side. Most people camp beside the runway.Areálom je skutočné trávnaté letisko, nie park, a z toho vyplýva väčšina jeho atmosféry: pódiá v otvorenom priestore, za nimi hangáre, pod nohami tráva — v mokrom ročníku blato — a po oboch stranách kopce Považia. Weather on open ground is not an abstraction here. In 2009 a storm brought down a stage structure during the festival; two people were killed and the remaining programme was called off. Pohoda has spoken plainly about it since, and site safety is part of how the festival now describes itself.Počasie na otvorenej ploche tu nie je abstrakcia. Calling Pohoda a music festival is accurate and incomplete. There is a literary tent with readings and arguments in it, a theatre and dance programme, films, and debates on whatever the country cannot stop talking about that year.Nazvať Pohodu hudobným festivalom je presné, ale neúplné. Má literárny stan s čítaniami a spormi, divadelný a tanečný program, filmy a diskusie o tom, o čom sa v krajine práve ten rok nedá prestať hovoriť.
None of that is filler for the afternoons. Writers, civic organisations and small theatre companies are billed the way bands are, and it is entirely possible to spend half a day here without hearing an amplified guitar. The site is also laid out so that wheelchair users can reach the stages.Nič z toho nie je iba výplň popoludní. What the name meansČo znamená ten názov
The name is not a brand invented for a poster. Pohoda is an ordinary Slovak word for settled, unhurried well-being — the state of an afternoon with nowhere to be. English has no single word for it; "ease" comes closest and still misses.Názov nie je značka vymyslená pre plagát. Pohoda je bežné slovenské slovo pre pokojnú, neuponáhľanú spokojnosť — stav popoludnia, ktoré nikam nemusí. Angličtina preň jedno slovo nemá; najbližšie je „ease“, a aj tak to nie je ono.
It is a fair description of the intent as well. The festival is not sold on excess, and what people describe afterwards is usually the temperature of the crowd rather than any one set on any one stage.Vystihuje to aj zámer. Getting there from TrenčínAko sa tam dostať z Trenčína
Trenčín sits on the main railway line between Bratislava and Žilina, so the festival can be reached by train from either end of the country. The airfield is a few kilometres from the station — walkable if you are not carrying a tent, and served by shuttles through the festival. Driving is the harder choice: parking is finite and everyone arrives on the same afternoon. Come a day early and Trenčín Castle is worth the climb.Letisko je od stanice vzdialené niekoľko kilometrov — pešo sa to dá zvládnuť, ak práve nenesiete stan, a počas festivalu premávajú kyvadlové autobusy. Autom je to zložitejšie: parkovacích miest je obmedzený počet a všetci prichádzajú v to isté popoludnie. Ak prídete o deň skôr, oplatí sa vyjsť na Trenčiansky hrad.
