For most of its history this territory was not a national state and was never ethnically simple. It sat where the Slavic, Hungarian and German language areas meet, on the trade routes between them, and the kings of Hungary actively recruited settlers — German miners, Wallachian shepherds — because the land needed working and the mines needed skill.Toto územie väčšinu svojich dejín nebolo národným štátom a nikdy nebolo etnicky jednoduché.
