Sliač stands on a travertine terrace above the Hron, about six kilometres north of Zvolen and some fifteen from Banská Bystrica, on the road and rail corridor that joins them. The spa is not in the town but on the wooded hill above it.Sliač leží na travertínovej terase nad Hronom, asi šesť kilometrov severne od Zvolena a zhruba pätnásť od Banskej Bystrice, na cestnom a železničnom koridore, ktorý ich spája. The bathing spring — the Kúpeľný prameň — surfaces at about 33 °C, below body temperature, and is heavily charged with carbon dioxide. That pairing is the point: hot water loses its gas, and this water is cool enough to reach the bath still fizzing.Kúpeľný prameň vyviera s teplotou okolo 33 °C, teda nižšou, než má ľudské telo, a je silne sýtený oxidom uhličitým. The drinking springs are colder again, roughly 12 to 22 °C, two of them strongly iron-bearing and sharp to taste. A hot bath makes the heart work harder — exactly what the patients Sliač exists for cannot afford. Water near skin temperature does not, and the dissolved carbon dioxide opens the small vessels of the skin, so the body reads the bath as warm while the pulse stays down.Horúci kúpeľ núti srdce pracovať viac — a to je presne to, čo si pacienti, pre ktorých Sliač existuje, dovoliť nemôžu. Among Slovakia's spa towns Sliač is the best known for the heart, and the only one that uses the dry spring gas rising with the water as well as the water itself. By the spa's own account, naturally isothermal water this strongly carbonated occurs in only a handful of places worldwide.Kúpele Sliač sú spomedzi slovenských kúpeľných miest najznámejšie kardiologické kúpele a jediné, ktoré popri samotnej vode využívajú aj suchý žriedlový plyn, ktorý s ňou vystupuje. All of it is treatment under medical supervision, prescribed and timed. The Palace, the dvorana and the parkPalace, dvorana a park

The grounds are large: an English park begun in the nineteenth century that loses its edges and becomes forest, and anyone can walk into it. Above it stands the Palace, the functionalist sanatorium every photograph of Sliač is taken of — the result of a 1924 competition won by the Czech architect Rudolf Stockar, and built through the 1930s.Areál je veľký: anglický park založený v devätnástom storočí, ktorý stráca okraje a prechádza do lesa, a prejsť sa ním môže ktokoľvek. Nad ním stojí Palace, funkcionalistický liečebný dom, ktorý je na každej fotografii Sliača — vzišiel zo súťaže z roku 1924, ktorú vyhral český architekt Rudolf Stockar, a postavili ho v priebehu tridsiatych rokov.

The dvorana, the spa's social hall from the same building programme, is the other half of a stay: the restaurant, the hall, the concert, the evening that is not a procedure. This is a medical institution before it is anything else. Most people here are on a course of treatment, and the rhythm is procedures, meals and unhurried walking rather than a resort's programme.V prvom rade je to zdravotnícke zariadenie. Väčšina ľudí tu absolvuje liečebný pobyt a rytmus miesta určujú procedúry, jedlo a pomalá chôdza, nie rezortný program.

The walking is part of it. Marked loops of graded length run through the park and the forest above, and the spa calls them heart routes, which is not a metaphor: they let effort be raised a step at a time. There are four tennis courts in the grounds as well, and an open-air thermal pool fed by the same carbonated water.Aj chôdza je súčasťou liečby. Parkom a lesom nad ním vedú značené okruhy odstupňovanej dĺžky, ktoré kúpele volajú srdiečkové trasy — a nie je to metafora: záťaž sa vďaka nim dá zvyšovať po krokoch. V areáli sú aj štyri tenisové kurty a letné termálne kúpalisko napájané tou istou uhličitou vodou.

Sitting on the corridor between two cities, it also makes an easy base: both are a short train ride away, and the paths above the park run on into the Kremnické vrchy.Keďže kúpele ležia na koridore medzi dvoma mestami, sú aj pohodlnou základňou: do oboch je to vlakom krátko a chodníky nad parkom pokračujú do Kremnických vrchov.

The Zvolen–Banská Bystrica railway runs below the terrace and has its own station, Sliač kúpele, with either city minutes away; the main road and its buses follow the same corridor. The airport on the flat ground by the river carries the town's name. It is a military airfield first, and its civil timetable has started and stopped over the years, so it is not something to plan a journey around — but it is why an arrival in central Slovakia is often labelled Sliač.Letisko na rovine pri rieke nesie meno mesta. V prvom rade je to vojenské letisko a jeho civilný letový poriadok sa v priebehu rokov opakovane začínal aj končil, takže cestu naň stavať netreba — je však dôvodom, prečo sa prílet do stredného Slovenska často označuje ako Sliač.
