Copper Money, Turned into StonePeniaze z medi, premenené na kameň

The Thurzós were not an old warrior dynasty. They came up through mining and trade — the copper business of the Slovak mountains, run in partnership with the Fugger bankers of Augsburg — and turned commercial wealth into land, titles and, eventually, the highest office in the Kingdom of Hungary. Bytča is what that ascent looked like when it decided to build itself a house.

In the fifteen-seventies, on the site of an older water castle, an Italian master builder raised for František Thurzó a four-winged Renaissance residence around a rectangular courtyard, with a tower over the gate, corner turrets and a moat. It is neither a fortress pretending to be a palace nor a palace pretending to be safe: it is the Italian courtyard type, adapted to a country that still occasionally needed walls.V sedemdesiatych rokoch šestnásteho storočia postavil taliansky staviteľ na mieste staršieho vodného hradu pre Františka Turzu štvorkrídlové renesančné sídlo okolo obdĺžnikového nádvoria, s vežou nad bránou, nárožnými vežičkami a vodnou priekopou. Nie je to pevnosť predstierajúca palác ani palác predstierajúci bezpečie: je to taliansky nádvorový typ prispôsobený krajine, ktorá múry ešte občas potrebovala.

His son Juraj ThurzóGyörgy Thurzó — took the family as far as it could go, serving as Palatine of Hungary from 1609 until his death in 1616. That made Bytča, for those years, one of the political centres of the kingdom: the place where the second man in the realm kept his household, his archive and his court.
