Trnava kept its walls, and almost everything worth seeing sits inside them — a Renaissance watchtower over the market square, the town hall on Hlavná, the oldest surviving purpose-built theatre in Slovakia, and long runs of brick rampart you can walk end to end. Trnava was called the Little Rome of Hungary because the Esztergom archbishops moved here when the Ottomans took Esztergom, and the skyline still shows it: a Gothic basilica on the highest point of the old town, the first Baroque church ever built in Slovakia, and half a dozen more towers within ten minutes' walk of one another. Trnava's museums are all inside the walls and all a few minutes apart: the regional museum in a former Poor Clares convent, a museum of book culture in a 16th-century seminary, the house of the composer Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský, and the region's contemporary art gallery. Two landscapes meet at Trnava. Inside the walls the old moat became a park promenade a kilometre and a half long; half an hour north-west the Little Carpathians rise straight off the plain at Smolenice, and one day there covers the only show cave in western Slovakia, a canyon reserve with an intermittent waterfall, a Hallstatt hillfort and the highest summit of the range.Pri Trnave sa stretávajú dve krajiny. Trnava's leisure is deliberately close in: the city's swimming is three kilometres from the main square at Kamenný mlyn, reached by a city bus or a continuous cycle path, and the same ring of paths takes you to a lakeside zone with a fire pit and to a small free mini-farm. Everything here is municipal or free — the region's paid thermal parks are farther east and are not listed.Trnavský oddych je zámerne blízko: mestské kúpanie je tri kilometre od hlavného námestia v Kamennom mlyne, dostanete sa tam mestskou dopravou aj súvislou cyklotrasou a rovnaký okruh chodníkov vás dovedie k jazeru s ohniskom aj k malej bezplatnej minifarme.
