The High Tatras rise straight out of the Poprad basin — no foothill preamble, just forest, then granite. Along their southern rim runs the Tatra electric railway, threading the three resort towns together: Štrbské Pleso beside its mirror lake, Starý Smokovec with its spa-era hotels, and Tatranská Lomnica under the cable car.
