Pro Patria is a treatment house built during the First World War, in the years when Ľudovít Winter was running the Piešťany spa — a low, unassuming building on Spa Island, named for the Latin inscription it carries: pro patria, for the homeland. Bathing at Piešťany began where the hot water and the mud came up: at the river, improvised, and only in the warm half of the year. The change came with permanent construction. The Erdődy family, who held the Piešťany estate, put up the first masonry bath houses in the early nineteenth century — the buildings known since 1923 as the Napoleon Baths.
