The oldest bath buildings on Spa Island stand as a group rather than as a single house. The Napoleon Baths went up in stages from the early nineteenth century, when the Erdődy family held the Piešťany estate, and it is with them that a riverbank people came to became a place that was built. The island exists at all because the Váh divides below the town centre, and the hot sulphurous springs rise on the ground between its two arms. That is the whole logic of the place: the bath houses were put where the water comes out of the earth, and the park, the bridge and the hotels followed them. The name points to the era in which the earliest of the houses was raised, and it then stayed with everything added later. Grander architecture reached the island only in the twentieth century — the arched Colonnade Bridge, and bath houses built at hotel scale; later still came the long blocks of the Balnea generation. The Napoleon group was neither cleared away nor turned into the showpiece.
