Bratislava's medieval core is small — you can walk from one side of the vanished town walls to the other in twenty minutes — but it is dense with the leftovers of two centuries as the capital of Royal Hungary, when the court, the diet and the coronations all sat here. Around that core the city spreads into a second, later layer: Habsburg palaces on the ring, a Soviet memorial on the skyline, and a flying saucer on a bridge pylon over the Danube.
As the capital, Bratislava holds the head offices and the flagship buildings of both national institutions — the Slovak National Museum and the Slovak National Gallery — alongside a city museum spread across eight separate historic houses and a city gallery in two baroque palaces. The range runs from a Roman fort on the Danube Limes at Rusovce to a modern-art museum built out on a peninsula in the river at Čunovo.
For two and a half centuries this was where the kings of Hungary were crowned, and St Martin's still carries a gilded replica of the crown on its spire. Around it stand the churches of the orders that filled the walled town — Franciscans, Poor Clares, Trinitarians, Capuchins.Dve a pol storočia sa tu korunovali uhorskí králi a Dóm sv. Martina dodnes nesie na veži pozlátenú repliku koruny. Okolo neho stoja kostoly reholí, ktoré zapĺňali opevnené mesto — františkánov, klarisiek, trinitárov, kapucínov.
Bratislava is the rare capital that keeps a real forest inside its own boundary: the Little Carpathians end here, and their last wooded ridge — the Bratislava Forest Park — comes down almost to the edge of the centre. South and west of it the city meets water instead, in the Danube floodplain forests and at the confluence with the Morava under Devín, where Austria begins on the far bank.
Most of what families do here happens on the two edges of the city rather than in the middle: up in the forest park, where a chairlift runs to the summit of Kamzík and the zoo backs onto the woods, and down at the Čunovo waterworks, where the Danube has been rebuilt into an artificial whitewater course and a museum peninsula.

Begin where Slovakia begins for most travellers: in the cobbled lanes of Bratislava's Old Town. Michael's Gate (Michalská brána), the last survivor of the medieval city's gates, still funnels visitors beneath its copper onion dome, while a few streets away St Martin's Cathedral served as the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1563 to 1830 — nineteen kings and queens, Maria Theresa among them, were crowned here, and a gilded replica of the royal crown tops its spire to this day.
The city wears its later centuries just as well. The Blue Church of St Elisabeth, an Art Nouveau confection by Ödön Lechner, looks piped from pale-blue icing; the UFO observation deck hovers atop the pylon of the SNP Bridge with views reaching into Austria and Hungary; and down at street level Čumil, the bronze "man at work", has grinned at passers-by from his manhole since 1997.Mestu pristanú aj neskoršie storočia.
