The motorway map is easiest to read from the corners: the D2 runs the western edge from the Czech border past Bratislava to Hungary, the D4 ring and the R7 expressway bypass the capital, the R1 expressway strikes out through Trnava country and Nitra to Banská Bystrica, and the D3 is gradually pushing through Kysuce towards Poland. The main event is the D1 from Bratislava to Košice — after the 7.5-kilometre Višňové tunnel, Slovakia’s longest, opened in December 2025, one last gap in the north remains, where traffic still drops onto the ordinary road along the Váh.Diaľničná mapa sa najľahšie číta od okrajov: D2 vedie po západnom okraji od českej hranice popri Bratislave až k tej maďarskej, okruh D4 a rýchlostná cesta R7 obchádzajú hlavné mesto, rýchlostná cesta R1 mieri cez Trnavsko a Nitru do Banskej Bystrice a D3 sa postupne prediera Kysucami smerom k Poľsku. To use the motorways and expressways in anything up to 3.5 tonnes you need the e-vignette — the elektronická diaľničná známka. There is no windscreen sticker: the vignette is purely digital, tied to your number plate and enforced by camera, bought in minutes through the official eznamka portal and app, at petrol stations or at border crossings, in 1-day, 10-day, 30-day and 365-day versions. Two rules to take seriously: Slovakia applies zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel — not one beer — and in winter conditions, when snow or ice actually covers the road, winter tyres are mandatory, so fit them for any cold-season mountain trip.Na diaľnice a rýchlostné cesty potrebujete s vozidlom do 3,5 tony elektronickú diaľničnú známku. Žiadna nálepka na sklo: známka je čisto digitálna, viazaná na evidenčné číslo vozidla a kontrolovaná kamerami, kúpite ju za pár minút cez oficiálny portál či aplikáciu eznamka, na čerpacích staniciach alebo na hraničných priechodoch, a to v 1-dňovej, 10-dňovej, 30-dňovej a 365-dňovej verzii. Dve pravidlá berte vážne: za volantom platí nulová tolerancia alkoholu — ani jedno pivo — a v zimných podmienkach, keď je na ceste sneh alebo ľad, sú zimné pneumatiky povinné, takže na každú cestu do hôr v chladnej časti roka ich rovno nasaďte.
