The Tatra Electric RailwaysTatranské elektrické železnice

The narrow-gauge electric lines linking Poprad with Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso are not a heritage novelty. They are the public transport of the High Tatras, running all year in the national timetable, and the rack railway from Štrba is the second way up.Úzkorozchodné elektrické trate spájajúce Poprad so Starým Smokovcom, Tatranskou Lomnicou a Štrbským Plesom nie sú historickou kuriozitou.

The line that holds the resorts togetherTrať, ktorá drží strediská pohromade

The Tatra settlements sit in a row along one contour of the southern slope — Štrbské Pleso, Vyšné Hágy, Nový Smokovec, Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lesná, Tatranská Lomnica — and the electric railway is the thread that strings them together. From Poprad it climbs to Starý Smokovec, where the network divides: west to Štrbské Pleso, east to Tatranská Lomnica.

It behaves like a tram line. Trains run through the day at short intervals, all year, in weather that closes roads, and they carry hotel staff going to work as readily as walkers with poles. The narrow-gauge platforms at Poprad-Tatry are part of the same station a level above the mainline ones, so an express from Bratislava and a train into the mountains are one change apart.

Few mountain resort areas in central Europe still run on rails as a matter of course. That, rather than any nostalgia, is what makes the Tatra lines worth a chapter of their own.V strednej Európe už len málokde tvorí železnica samozrejmý základ horského strediska. Práve preto — a nie z nostalgie — si tatranské trate zaslúžia vlastnú kapitolu.

Built for the spa agePostavené pre éru kúpeľov

Electric trains have climbed into the Tatras since 1908, when the first line reached Starý Smokovec from Poprad; the branches to Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso followed in the years before the First World War. This was the height of the Tatra building boom, when the settlements were the spa and climbing resorts of the Hungarian kingdom and the railway was what made them reachable.Elektrické vlaky stúpajú do Tatier od roku 1908, keď prvá trať dorazila z Popradu do Starého Smokovca; odbočky do Tatranskej Lomnice a na Štrbské Pleso pribudli v rokoch pred prvou svetovou vojnou. Bol to vrchol tatranského stavebného rozmachu, keď osady boli kúpeľnými a horolezeckými strediskami uhorského kráľovstva a železnica bola tým, čo ich sprístupnilo.

The funicular from Starý Smokovec up to Hrebienok belongs to the same period and the same idea: move guests from the station to the treeline without building a carriage road. The pattern set then — arrive by train, move along the slope by train, go up by cable — is still how the Tatras work.

The line has taken its share of damage since. The windstorm of November 2004 flattened a wide belt of spruce along the southern slope, and for years afterwards the trains ran through open ground where forest had stood on both sides. The forest is coming back unevenly, and the view from the window is a record of it.Trať si odvtedy vytrpela svoje. Vetrová kalamita z novembra 2004 zvalila široký pás smrečín pozdĺž južného svahu a vlaky ešte roky potom prechádzali otvorenou krajinou tam, kde predtým stál les po oboch stranách.

The rack railway from ŠtrbaZubačka zo Štrby

The second way up is a rack railway, the zubačka, climbing from Štrba on the mainline to Štrbské Pleso: roughly five hundred metres of height in about five kilometres, far too steep for wheel grip alone. A toothed rail runs between the running rails and a cogwheel under the train engages it.Druhou cestou nahor je ozubnicová železnica — zubačka — ktorá stúpa zo Štrby na hlavnej trati na Štrbské Pleso: zhruba päťsto výškových metrov na piatich kilometroch, oveľa prudšie, než zvládne samotná adhézia. Medzi koľajnicami vedie ozubnica, do ktorej zapadá ozubené koleso pod vlakom.

It opened at the end of the nineteenth century, was abandoned in the 1930s as other links improved, and was rebuilt and reopened in 1970, when Štrbské Pleso hosted the world nordic skiing championships and had to move crowds up from the mainline. It has worked ever since.

For anyone arriving on a fast train from the west it is the shortest route into the mountains: leave the express at Štrba and change to the rack line for the last climb. Coming from Poprad, the electric railway gets there too, the long way round the slope.

Trains, tickets and what has changedVlaky, lístky a čo sa zmenilo

Both the electric lines and the rack railway are part of the national railway and are run by the state passenger operator, not by a preservation society. They use ordinary tickets and stand in the ordinary timetable, which means nothing about them has to be arranged in advance.Elektrické trate aj zubačka sú súčasťou národnej železnice a prevádzkuje ich štátny osobný dopravca, nie spolok nadšencov. Platia na nich bežné cestovné lístky a stoja v bežnom cestovnom poriadku, takže nič netreba dohadovať vopred.

The rolling stock has turned over twice in living memory. Articulated units arrived around the turn of the century, and Swiss-built trains took over both the electric lines and the rack railway in 2022. Older red units survive in enthusiasts' hands and come out on special workings.

In winter the lines carry the ski traffic; in summer they deliver walkers to the trailheads at Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica, where the cable cars and the funicular take over and the walking begins.V zime vozia trate lyžiarov, v lete vysádzajú turistov na východiskách na Štrbskom Plese, v Starom Smokovci a v Tatranskej Lomnici, kde ich preberajú lanovky a kde sa začína chôdza.
