Nitra is a small city with a large student body, and the arithmetic shows in the streets. Two public universities sit here — one agricultural, one broad-based — together with the cluster of agricultural and food research institutes that makes this the country's centre of gravity for everything grown, bred or processed.Nitra je malé mesto s veľkou študentskou obcou a tá aritmetika je na uliciach vidieť. Sídlia tu dve verejné vysoké školy — jedna poľnohospodárska, druhá so širokým záberom — a k nim celý zhluk poľnohospodárskych a potravinárskych výskumných ústavov, vďaka ktorým je toto mesto ťažiskom všetkého, čo sa v krajine pestuje, chová alebo spracúva.
Most of it happens in Chrenová, the quarter across the river to the east. The agricultural university's campus, its halls of residence, its botanical garden and the rectorate of the second university all stand a few minutes' walk from one another on and around Trieda Andreja Hlinku. The rest of the student city is scattered through the centre — faculty buildings in older streets, cheap canteen lunches, second-hand bookshops, and bars that are full on a Thursday and empty on a Saturday because half the students have gone home to their villages.Väčšina sa odohráva na Chrenovej, vo štvrti za riekou na východe. Areál poľnohospodárskej univerzity, jej internáty, botanická záhrada aj rektorát druhej univerzity stoja pár minút chôdze od seba na Triede Andreja Hlinku a v jej okolí. Zvyšok študentského mesta je rozsypaný po centre — fakultné budovy v starších uliciach, lacné obedy v menzách, antikvariáty a podniky, ktoré sú vo štvrtok plné a v sobotu prázdne, lebo polovica študentov odcestovala domov na dedinu.
