Monday closing is close to universal for museums and galleries here — the standard maintenance day, when the collections are worked on and the rooms are cleaned. Build the week around it rather than against it; castles and caves keep their own calendars and do not always follow the same rule.Pondelkové zatvorenie je v tunajších múzeách a galériách takmer pravidlom — je to bežný údržbový deň, keď sa pracuje na zbierkach a upratujú sa sály. The second pattern is the season. Castle museums, open-air museums and mine tours run a full timetable from spring to early autumn and a reduced one, or none at all, in winter; some close entirely between November and April. Museums inside towns generally stay open all year but shorten the day, and a few shut for stocktaking in the quiet months.Druhým vzorcom je sezóna. Last admission comes earlier than closing time — often by an hour, and by more where the visit is a guided route that has to be finished. Public holidays follow their own arrangements, and the days around Christmas and Easter are the least predictable of the year.Posledný vstup býva skôr než zatváracia hodina — často o hodinu a viac tam, kde je návšteva lektorovanou trasou, ktorá sa musí stihnúť dokončiť. Guided tours, and what language they are inPrehliadky a v akom jazyku sú

Furnished interiors — manor rooms, castle apartments, mines — are shown on guided tours in timed groups rather than walked alone. Tours leave at fixed times, fill up on summer weekends and around festivals, and sometimes need a minimum number of visitors before they run at all.Zariadené interiéry — kaštieľne izby, hradné apartmány, bane — sa ukazujú na prehliadkach so sprievodcom v skupinách s pevnými časmi, nie samostatnou prechádzkou. Prehliadky odchádzajú v presných hodinách, cez letné víkendy a počas festivalov sa zapĺňajú a niekedy sa konajú až od určitého počtu návštevníkov.

The tour is normally in Slovak. Larger institutions have foreign-language texts to carry round the route, and some can guide in English, German or Hungarian if it is arranged in advance; treat that as something to book rather than to ask for at the desk. Where a museum works in two languages as a matter of course — the Hungarian-language collections of the south, the Rusyn and Ukrainian ones of the north-east — it will say so.Prehliadka býva v slovenčine. Väčšie inštitúcie majú cudzojazyčné texty, ktoré si po trase nesiete so sebou, a niektoré vedia sprevádzať po anglicky, nemecky či maďarsky, ak sa to dohodne vopred; rátajte s tým, že sa to objednáva, nie žiada pri pokladni. Tam, kde múzeum bežne pracuje v dvoch jazykoch — maďarské zbierky na juhu, rusínske a ukrajinské na severovýchode — to uvádza.

Underground is a different visit again. An adit or a mine tour means a helmet, a lamp and usually a borrowed coat, steps and standing water, and a temperature in single figures whatever the weather outside; there may be an age limit. Štôlňa alebo banská prehliadka znamená prilbu, lampu a zvyčajne aj požičaný plášť, schody a miestami vodu pod nohami a teplotu do desiatich stupňov bez ohľadu na počasie vonku; niekde platí veková hranica. Sprístupnené jaskyne, ktorým sa na týchto stránkach venujeme osobitne, fungujú na rovnakom princípe.

Photography, tickets and accessFotografovanie, vstupenky a prístup

Photography rules change by building, by route and by exhibition, and a show of loaned works is often closed to cameras entirely. Where photography is permitted there may be a separate photo ticket, and flash and tripods usually are not. Ask at the ticket desk rather than discover the rule in the middle of a tour.Pravidlá fotografovania sa líšia podľa budovy, trasy aj výstavy a výstava zapožičaných diel býva pre fotoaparáty celkom zatvorená. Not every small museum takes a card, so it is worth carrying cash in euro for the ones off the main routes. Larger bags go to the cloakroom before a furnished interior, and umbrellas and rucksacks are the usual sticking point at the door.Nie každé malé múzeum prijíma kartu, preto sa do tých mimo hlavných trás oplatí vziať hotovosť v eurách. Väčšie tašky sa pred zariadeným interiérom odkladajú do šatne a najčastejšie vás pri dverách zastavia kvôli dáždniku alebo batohu.

Access is the honest weak point. These are historic buildings — stairs, thresholds, uneven floors, and in a castle a climb before the ticket desk is even in sight. The bigger institutions have made parts of their routes accessible and will say what is possible; ask about the specific route rather than the building, because the answer differs from one floor to the next.Bezbariérovosť je úprimne slabým miestom. Ide o historické stavby — schody, prahy, nerovné podlahy a na hrade aj stúpanie skôr, než vôbec uvidíte pokladňu. What to expect insideČo čakať vnútri

Labelling in the national institutions is normally bilingual; in a small regional museum it may be Slovak only, with a printed English sheet if you ask for one. The attendant in the room usually knows the collection better than the label does, and in the smallest museums the person selling the tickets is also the curator.Popisky v národných inštitúciách bývajú dvojjazyčné; v malom regionálnom múzeu môžu byť len po slovensky, s tlačeným anglickým listom, ak si oň poviete. The word museum covers a wide range here. A branch may be a manor house of fifty rooms with a park, or a single upstairs room in a village house with three cases and a loom; the name says nothing about the scale, and neither does belonging to a national institution.Slovo múzeum tu pokrýva veľmi široké pásmo. Pobočkou môže byť kaštieľ s päťdesiatimi izbami a parkom aj jediná izba na poschodí dedinského domu s tromi vitrínami a krosnami; názov o rozsahu nehovorí nič a nehovorí to ani príslušnosť k národnej inštitúcii.
