Bystrica grew rich early: copper mined in the valleys around it made the town one of the great mining centres of the old Kingdom of Hungary, and the palaces of its mining magnates still line SNP Square — a long, gently sloping showpiece with the leaning clock tower at its head and café tables down its middle. The other pole of the city's story is the twentieth century: Banská Bystrica was the centre of the Slovak National Uprising of 1944, and the striking split concrete memorial building of the SNP Museum holds that memory in a park just off the centre. Around it all, the city works as the gateway to the mountains — the Low Tatras rise directly to its north.Druhým pólom mestského príbehu je dvadsiate storočie: Banská Bystrica bola centrom Slovenského národného povstania z roku 1944 a výrazná rozpoltená budova Múzea SNP nesie túto pamäť v parku kúsok od centra.
