One River, Two ValleysJedna rieka, dve doliny
The Trenčín Region is north-western Slovakia at its most legible. Its spine is the middle course of the Váh — the stretch Slovaks call Považie — running between the White Carpathians on the Moravian side and the wooded ridges of the Považský Inovec and the Strážov Hills on the other, with Trenčín in the middle of the corridor and Považská Bystrica towards its northern end. Over the hills to the east lies the region's second room: Upper Nitra, the basin around Prievidza, with the spa-and-château town of Bojnice next door.Trenčiansky kraj je severozápadné Slovensko vo svojej najčitateľnejšej podobe. Jeho chrbticou je stredný tok Váhu — úsek, ktorému hovoríme Považie — zovretý medzi Bielymi Karpatmi na moravskej strane a zalesnenými hrebeňmi Považského Inovca a Strážovských vrchov na strane druhej; uprostred koridoru leží Trenčín, pri jeho severnom konci Považská Bystrica. Za kopcami na východe má kraj druhú izbu: Hornú Nitru, kotlinu okolo Prievidze, s kúpeľno-zámockými Bojnicami hneď vedľa.
The river explains the castles. For centuries the Váh was one of the great routes between the Danube lands and the passes to the north, and whoever held its crags held the road — so the crags grew castles, one within sight of the next. Two of them, Trenčín and Bojnice, are furnished museums today; the rest of the chain — Beckov, Čachtice, Považský hrad, Tematín — stands as ruins on their ridgelines, and walking up to them is one of the best things this region offers.Rieka vysvetľuje hrady. Váh bol po stáročia jednou z veľkých ciest medzi Podunajskom a priesmykmi na severe, a kto držal jeho bralá, držal cestu — a tak na bralách vyrástli hrady, jeden na dohľad od druhého. Dva z nich, Trenčín a Bojnice, sú dnes zariadenými múzeami; zvyšok šnúry — Beckov, Čachtice, Považský hrad, Tematín — stojí ako zrúcaniny na svojich hrebeňoch a výstupy k nim patria k tomu najlepšiemu, čo tento kraj ponúka.
