Rádio Slovensko is the first and largest network of the public broadcaster, and the one most people mean when they say they heard something on the radio. Its remit is speech before music: domestic and foreign news, current affairs, interviews with people in office, phone-ins and consumer reporting, with the music between the talk rather than underneath it.Rádio Slovensko je prvou a najväčšou stanicou verejnoprávneho vysielateľa — tou, ktorú má väčšina ľudí na mysli, keď povie, že niečo počula v rádiu. It also carries the duties that come with being public rather than commercial: election coverage, transmissions from state commemorations, civil-protection and emergency announcements, and continuous broadcasting when other systems fail. Bulletins run through the day and are, for much of the audience, the reference version of an event; around them sit longer current-affairs blocks, studio debates and reporting from the regions. Sport is a large part of the output and one of the reasons listeners leave the station on: ice hockey and football commentary, athletics, and the summer and winter Olympic Games carried live where the rights allow. The rest is service radio in the older sense: weather, traffic and road conditions, farming and health items, consumer advice. Regular radio broadcasting from Bratislava began in the 1920s, which puts Slovak public radio among the older broadcasters in central Europe. For most of the twentieth century it was the Slovak arm of a Czechoslovak system; after 1993 it continued as Slovenský rozhlas, an institution of the new state.Pravidelné rozhlasové vysielanie z Bratislavy sa začalo v 20. rokoch, čím sa slovenský verejnoprávny rozhlas radí k starším vysielateľom v strednej Európe. In 2011 radio and television were merged into one body, RTVS, and in 2024 that body was reconstituted by law as STVR, Slovenská televízia a rozhlas.
