Radio Slovakia International is the external service of STVR, the Slovak public broadcaster: the channel whose job is to explain the country to people who do not live in it. Its newsrooms work in several languages, English, German, French, Russian and Spanish among them, and it also broadcasts in Slovak for Slovaks abroad.Rádio Slovakia International je zahraničné vysielanie verejnoprávnej STVR: okruh, ktorého úlohou je vysvetľovať krajinu ľuďom, čo v nej nežijú.
Every country of this size runs something like it, and for the same reason. A state of five million people, speaking a language nobody else speaks, has no other way of being reported on in its own words; the alternative is being described entirely by other people's correspondents.
The daily output is short and news-led: what happened in Slovakia today, what it means, and enough context that a listener with no prior knowledge can follow it. Around that sits a magazine of features — politics and the economy, culture, science, sport, travel, and the parts of the country a visitor would never find alone. Okolo toho stojí publicistický magazín — politika a hospodárstvo, kultúra, veda, šport, cestovanie a tie časti krajiny, ktoré by návštevník sám nikdy nenašiel.
The Slovak-language service is a different thing again. It is aimed at the diaspora — the descendants of the great emigration to America, the Slovak communities in Hungary, Serbia, Romania and Ukraine, and the far larger number who have left for work since 2004. It carries the domestic news and culture that keep a connection to a country you no longer live in.Slovenské vysielanie je opäť niečo iné.
Much of the archive is published as podcasts, which suits the material. A feature about a castle or a folk instrument does not go stale the way a bulletin does, and its audience arrives months later from a search engine rather than at the hour it was broadcast.
Slovakia's own external service dates from the first years of independence; before that, broadcasting abroad from Czechoslovakia was run from Prague. For most of the twentieth century an external service meant shortwave, and the transmissions went out over long distances to anyone with a receiver and the patience to tune it.Vlastné zahraničné vysielanie má Slovensko od prvých rokov samostatnosti; predtým sa vysielanie z Československa do zahraničia riadilo z Prahy. Väčšinu 20. storočia znamenalo zahraničné vysielanie krátke vlny a relácie tak putovali na veľké vzdialenosti ku každému, kto mal prijímač a trpezlivosť ho naladiť.
That era has largely ended. Shortwave audiences fell away as the internet took over, transmission is expensive, and the service has been cut back, threatened and reprieved more than once — an ordinary history for a small country's external broadcaster. The institution around it changed names too, from Slovak Radio through RTVS in 2011 to STVR in 2024.Tá éra sa z veľkej časti skončila.
Today the service is largely an online one — the broadcaster's own site and app, podcast feeds and satellite carriage — with rebroadcasts by partner stations abroad in some countries. Shortwave, where it survives at all, is a far smaller part of the picture than it once was.Dnes je služba prevažne online — vlastná stránka a aplikácia vysielateľa, podcastové kanály a satelit — a v niektorých krajinách ju preberajú partnerské stanice. Krátke vlny, ak vôbec, sú dnes oveľa menšou časťou obrazu než kedysi.
The player on this page depends on STVR publishing a stream that outside sites may use, and on that stream carrying the language a listener wants, since the languages share airtime. Radio is not usually geo-blocked the way television is, which is rather the point of an external service, but the broadcaster's own site and app remain the reliable route.
