Rádio Patria is the minority-language service of STVR, the Slovak public broadcaster. Its remit is set by what the country is: a Hungarian-speaking belt along the whole southern border, Rusyn and Ukrainian villages in the north-east, and Czech, German and Polish populations elsewhere. It is a service rather than a format. Hungarian takes the largest share of the airtime because it has by far the largest audience, and the other languages hold blocks of their own. The Rusyn and Ukrainian output has long been made in the east, at the broadcaster's Košice studio.Je to skôr služba než formát. News and current affairs come first: what happened in the country today, in the listener's own language and with attention to the districts that speak it. For an older listener on the southern plain or in a Rusyn village under the Low Beskids, it is often the main daily source of national news that needs no translating in the head.Na prvom mieste je spravodajstvo a publicistika: čo sa dnes v krajine stalo, povedané v jazyku poslucháča a s pozornosťou venovanou okresom, kde sa ním hovorí. Pre staršieho poslucháča na južnej rovine alebo v rusínskej dedine pod Nízkymi Beskydami je to často hlavný denný zdroj celoštátnych správ, ktorý si netreba v hlave prekladať.
Culture and music make up most of the rest: minority folk repertoires, church music, contemporary songwriting, radio drama, and reporting on the theatres, schools, choirs and cultural associations these communities run. There are programmes for children, and language itself is treated as subject matter — dialect, usage, and how a language survives outside the official forms.Kultúra a hudba tvoria väčšinu zvyšku: menšinový folklórny repertoár, chrámová hudba, súčasná pesničkárska tvorba, rozhlasové hry a spravodajstvo o divadlách, školách, spevokoloch a kultúrnych spolkoch, ktoré tieto komunity vedú. Sú tu relácie pre deti a témou je aj samotný jazyk — nárečie, úzus a to, ako jazyk prežije mimo úradných tlačív.
The tone is not folkloric. Much of the output is ordinary current affairs, and the long argument about minority language rights — school funding, bilingual place-name signs, amendments to the language law — gets more room here than the mainstream channels can give it.Tón nie je folklórny. Minority broadcasting here is nearly as old as broadcasting itself. Hungarian-language programmes go back to the interwar years, when the Košice transmitter served a region of mixed languages, and after 1945 the state radio kept Hungarian and Ukrainian newsrooms permanently. The name Patria dates only from the renaming of the channels in the first decade of this century; the newsrooms behind it are much older.Menšinové vysielanie je v tejto krajine takmer také staré ako rozhlas sám. Relácie v maďarčine siahajú do medzivojnových rokov, keď košický vysielač slúžil jazykovo zmiešanému regiónu, a po roku 1945 udržiaval štátny rozhlas maďarskú a ukrajinskú redakciu natrvalo. Názov Patria pochádza až z premenovania okruhov v prvej dekáde tohto storočia; redakcie za ním sú oveľa staršie.
The institution around it has been renamed repeatedly — Slovak Radio and Slovak Television merged into RTVS in 2011, and STVR took its place in 2024 — and each reorganisation is watched closely by the communities the station serves, because minority broadcasting quietly loses hours when a schedule is redrawn.Inštitúcia okolo neho sa opakovane premenúvala — Slovenský rozhlas a Slovenská televízia sa v roku 2011 zlúčili do RTVS a v roku 2024 na jej mieste vznikla STVR — a každú reorganizáciu sledujú komunity, ktorým stanica slúži, veľmi pozorne: menšinové vysielanie potichu prichádza o hodiny vždy, keď sa prekresľuje programová schéma.
Patria has long worked from shared capacity rather than a channel of its own: much of its output goes out in blocks, at fixed times, on transmitters it shares. Online that matters less: the broadcaster carries the service as a stream with an archive, and a listener in Budapest is as well placed as one in Rimavská Sobota.Stanica dlho fungovala skôr na zdieľanej kapacite než na vlastnom okruhu: veľká časť jej vysielania ide v blokoch, v pevných denných časoch, na vysielačoch, o ktoré sa delí s inými.
